Psalm 119:36 ~ Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.
We all have “free will” to go about our lives as we please, doing what we want to do. Lord knows, there has been nothing “free” about some of my “free will” choices; some have cost me a lot. In some instances the cost has been financial, in others it cost me friendships and relationships or missed opportunities; these were lost because of the selfish desire to want more for myself. My heart was turned inwardly.
However, as children of God, our hearts should yearn to live a life of obedience to God’s word. And I believe most of us want to do that, but we still must deal with fleshly and worldly desires every day. It is our earthly nature to be selfish and self-centered; but we have been given the power to overcome our selfish nature through the gifting of the Holy Spirit. We should be like this Psalmist and pray to God that our hearts be turned toward his statutes, towards the word of God. I’m learning this is a daily and deliberate process. One must be intentional about putting your selfish desires to the side and truly thinking “what would Jesus do” and then do it. Do you want to know what “faith in action” looks like? By being obedient to God’s word and his instructions for your life.
Prayer: Lord, I pray that my selfish desires will be put to the side and that my heart be turned and transformed to Your will and purpose, so that others may be blessed and that You will be glorified. Amen
Purpose in Action: Take the time this week to evaluate your thoughts and actions. And then ask yourself, is my heart turned towards God or towards my own selfish gain?
