Psalm 118:8 ~ It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. (NIV)
We often hear people say, “just can’t trust anyone these days.” I have said it myself many times, especially after being disappointed, lied to, or manipulated by someone.
Trust is defined as “belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, etc.” That’s a lot to live up to. God knows our human nature and the struggle that we would have in trusting others, especially after experiencing hurt and heartache. That’s why He instructs us to find refuge in Him. He is our shelter and protection from all hurt, harm, and danger, including those that break our trust.
Broken trust causes walls to come up because we attempt to protect ourselves from being hurt again. Broken trust makes it difficult to connect with people because we do not know whom we can believe in. I have had several relationships were the person lied and misrepresented themselves. It left me very cautious of opening up to others. However, this scripture reminds us that God is our refuge. We can take covering under Him. What does this mean? It means God will protect us from the frailties’ of our human counterparts and even from our own untrustworthy moments. Remember, no human can be trusted 100% of the time, which means we too have failed to be fully trustworthy. Someone trusted you to complete a task or to be faithful to commitments you made, but for whatever reason you were unable to do so. We all must be held accountable for our actions.
It can be difficult to build trusting relationship, which is why we should always be prayerful about them. If we look to God, He will provide the wisdom and discernment to weed out those who are intentionally deceitful. He will show you the individuals with pure motives but unfortunately failed to meet your expectations. Then you can better answer the question, “can I trust you?”
Prayer: Lord, I place my trust wholly in You. Thank you for being my refuge and protection. Give me wisdom and discernment to know the motives of others as well as my own in order that I may build more trusting human relationships. Amen.
Purpose in Action: How have you handled relationships in which trust was broken? Did you pray about it? If not, please do and then journal what God is revealing to you about that person and the situation.
For His Purpose,
